Does fidgeting actually help you focus?

Short answer: probably not in the way fidget products claim. We make a fidget app, and we think you should know what the research says anyway.

The claim you see everywhere

Almost every fidget toy sold online says some version of the same thing: it improves focus, helps with ADHD, calms anxiety. Those claims usually trace back to a real and interesting body of research. The problem is that the research does not say what the marketing says it says.

What the research actually found

The genuinely well-supported finding is about spontaneous movement. Mark Rapport's group at the University of Central Florida showed that children move more when working memory is under load, and that in children with ADHD this activity is closely tied to executive demand rather than being random restlessness. A follow-up found that more movement was associated with better working memory performance in the ADHD group, and the authors warned that treatments which suppress hyperactivity "may have unintended consequences on working memory functioning."

A 2024 study of 70 adults with ADHD found the same shape of result: participants fidgeted more during correct trials on an attention task.

That's a compelling picture. But notice what it is: accelerometers measuring people's own bodies moving — legs bouncing, shifting in a chair. It is not a study of fidget toys.

The gap that matters. Evidence that self-generated movement supports working memory is not evidence that holding a fidget device does. Those are different things, and when they get conflated it is almost always in the direction that sells something.

When researchers tested the devices

They did test the devices, repeatedly, and the results are not flattering.

A 2025 meta-analysis in School Psychology Review pooled ten group-design studies covering 509 participants. The overall effect on academic and behavioural outcomes was Hedges' g = -0.014 — effectively zero, with no significant moderators. The authors' conclusion was that it is "important not to replace established, evidence-based interventions with fidget devices."

A 2018 study in the Journal of Attention Disorders gave fidget spinners to 60 preschoolers with ADHD in an A-B-A-B design with accelerometers and blind-coded video. Attention got worse while using them. The likely explanation is straightforward: an appealing object competes for attention rather than fading into the background.

A 2025 study of adults with ADHD put participants through a standardised stress test with or without a fidget ball. No difference in heart rate, heart rate variability or self-reported anxiety. The device group actually showed a weaker relationship between their fidgeting and their physiology, which the authors suggest may mean the object interfered with people's own self-regulation.

The one partial exception: a separate 2024 meta-analysis using single-case designs found a small positive effect. Single-case studies are more vulnerable to bias and selective publication, so the honest summary is mixed, with the more rigorous synthesis finding nothing.

What we think this means

Not that fidget toys are worthless — that would be its own overclaim. It means the reason to use one is that you like how it feels, not that it will make you smarter or more focused.

That turns out to be well-supported on its own terms. Studies with autistic and ADHD adults consistently find people describe repetitive movement as valuable in itself, and describe being stopped from doing it as genuinely unpleasant. You do not need a performance justification to do something that feels good with your hands.

Do fidget toys help ADHD?

There is good evidence that people with ADHD move more under mental load, and reasonable theory that this movement is compensatory. But that research is about spontaneous body movement, not about handheld fidget devices. A 2018 classroom study of children with ADHD found fidget spinners were associated with worse observed attention, not better.

So why do people like fidget toys?

Because they feel good, which is a perfectly sufficient reason. Research with autistic and ADHD adults consistently finds people describe repetitive movement as something they value in itself.
